I totally agree with your suggestion of turning off cell phones, etc. and talking with our kids. Additionally, it is critical to “play” with our kids. I highly recommend a wonderful book written by Dr. Stuart Brown, a leading expert on play behavior – “Play: How it Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul.” Play is the language of children. We need to return to a society where we value touch and feel, not point and click. Joyce

But we don’t have many geographical villages anymore, so somehow we need to replace them as you indicate. I think the same is true for the elderly in how traditional societies value and incorporate them (at least until they are too ill to be involved).

I was getting so concerned about childrearing in our (what kind of?) society that I was thinking maybe we need to go upstream and require a license to become parents. If we need a license to navigate roads, maybe we need them to help our children navigate life.

I totally agree with you. We have also walked away from managing our mentally ill – both as a society and in the family. Shameful.
