Karl---do I detect a note of surprize in your last offering? In my upper middle class upbringing, I never once had the feeling that doctors(all men) ever referred to themselves as healers much less as helpers. They were in the professions with some sort of humanity automatically bestowed upon them. And in those days doctors, lawyers, social workers, teachers, storekeepers, etc all lived in the same neighborhoods and at roughly the same econonmic level. Now isn't it the business of it all that has centrifuged it out. The issue is not to be a better healer(helper--the AMA tells me I am) but to be a better business man(wowan). But where is this all going; are doctors highly trained healers or highly trained technicians? Does a healer need to be highly trained? On the business school front I have come to notice that many schools offer different course of studies depending on the direction one wants to go for-profit or not-for-profit. I just know in my heart-of-hearts where all those docs(healers)are headed.
