Carl, we met last spring in Santa Fe at the Quaker/PepsiCo gathering and I have enjoyed your insights ever since. I feel a need to comment on the topic at hand, however. There's a good deal of Karma in all of this.

In the few time I have come to understand hospital costs I have become alarmed at the politics of who supplies and how. General statements are always wrong but there is some truth in the notion that patients were charged high rates because there was no alternative. That led to huge waste. Now, with insurance paying less of the medical bill, providers are having to deliver more with less. Unfortunately one person's waste is another person's meal and there seems to be enough selfish people in the system so that the reductions are in patient care and not in the cost of fax paper, car allowances, etc.

I believe that is funamentally true of profit or not-for-profit. Each has costs and the selfish practioner is more often found than the noble servant. Just like we knew human nature would play out.
