mental illness[ Follow Ups ] [ Post Followup ] [ Read More Messages in the Healing Cafe ] [ FAQ ] Posted by carefulshrink (152.163.100.12) on 17:09:32 20/06/05 well I cannot believe that I would ever be moved to write a comment, particularly in support of the DSM IV-TR, but I feel that it is important to remind all that the manual is only a tool to be used as a guide for disorders (not diseases) and that it does not discuss etiology or treatment, and it is most important to realize that it is the clinician's responsibility to diagnose and treat the individual. When patients are overprescribed medications we might consider other factors about the delivery of medical care such as the emphasis of biological therapies, and the family practitioners and internists who are treating mental illness, especially in light of managed care....the time crunch in the office, and the patient's request for brands that they see advertized. We also know that there are individuals with severe personality disorders who do not present for treatment, and these "deviants" as you point out can be irresponsible, endanger children, and elude the law.
