Dear Doc,
When I read your message and thought about your Mom saying she was sorry for affecting your Italy trip, it reminded me of my neighbor. She went in for hernia surgery 2 weeks ago today and found that she has pancreatic cancer. I am a bit familiar with it since my grandfather died of it and I was around to see it happen. Anyway, the following Thursday I took some flowers and food over to my neighbors. She was home from the hospital. On Tuesday, when I was checking on them again, I found out that she was back in the hospital. When I talked to her, she matter of factly told me she had pancreas cancer and that her husband was a basket case. I knew the news already from her husband, but tried to keep my conversation unemotional. This gracious lady thanked me for bringing over flowers and food the Thursday before. It struck me so strongly that she could be thanking me for what little I could do when she was faced with such grim news. Amazing, like your Ma. God love us all!
