Dear Dr.Resnick:
I am not advocating VNS as a treatment just using it as an example of how less invasive means of listening to our intuitive souls can be helpful in preventing depression. As far as the evidence for VNS's efficacy, it is certainly not exclusively anecdotal. It has improved mood in epileptics (Epilepsy Behav.42:203-210) and in refractory depression (Biol.Psychiatry 47(4)276-295).
Dear Ms.Meinke:
I do not generally respond to clinical questions via e-mail but your friends symptoms do not appear to me to be the exclusive result of her vagus nerve injury.
