Dear Dr. Hammerschlag, Interesting to learn that the SEC and IAMB have an interest in Haliburton's doings. As soon as the contract was announced, I felt embarrassed to be an American. Actually, it was only a continuation of the nightmare of the Bush presidency. How dreadful to feel sure that our president was looking for an excuse to attack Iraq beginning the day he stole the election from Al Gore. Having to be a War Country because we are the world's largest arms producer and we no longer have the Soviet Union to keep us in focus is terribly sad! I'm inclined to wonder if my historian step-uncle isn't right when he says the golden years of the United States of America were when we practiced isolationism. Is there such a thing as a force for good? One wonders. Meditation and love. Not easy to practice, but they may be the only things that work. Have you seen the Canadian Documentary: The Corporation? It is worth squirming in your seat for two hours to get their message. Thank you for your information on Haliburton, Dick Cheney and this administration. Do you suppose it is the end of a "civilization?" I always remember the quote (though not the author): "America is the only country that has gone from barbarism to decadence without passing through civilization." It always left me hopeful that there would be a step back into civilization. Perhaps not. Love, Patricia PS Interesting to note that the shareholder action is not about why did Haliburton get these contracts without fair bidding but instead is one of why didn't we get a bigger piece of this high calorie pie.
