My son has been on and off a program of suboxone for over a year. In Australia, it's prescribed by a doctor, but it must be picked up at a chemist ... every second day, so the restrictions on a person's life are considerable. My son was told nothing of the possible side effects. He began having severe breathing problems ... when I say 'severe' I mean that he was on the point of collapse after climbing a few steps. After a while suspected it was linked to the drug. When he queried the doctor he was treated like a hypochondriac junkie. My husband did a little research on the Internet and easily found information about the side effects ... aspiration problems are listed as one of the common side effects.

Replacing one drug with another is, in my opinion, futile without appropriate high quality counselling support (not from theorists who have no idea of what it is like to be addicted to an illegal drug) ... which should be an INTEGRAL part of the treatment.

From what I have seen, the 'replacement' drugs are at least as damaging to the body as those they are meant to replace ... in some cases more so.
