My last post should have the heading of Suboxone/Buprenorphine ... don't know how the email came to get at the top! A further comment: Buprenorphine is not by any means 'new'. My son, as stated, has been using it for over a year ... at least 18 months in fact. And doctors have been prescribing it here for at least a couple of years. The drug has been around, I am told, for around 30 years. I first read about it 8 or 9 years ago, when I was trying to find help for my son. I suspect that drug companies have simply commandeered it in recent times ... enabling them to make heaps of money by promoting it as the latest magic antidote - replacing naltrexone (which also did not live up to its promise). It is scandalous that, given that, given the length of time heroin addiction has been present in our society, the best we can do is replace it with another drug. 'Treatment' programs, as you say, are astoundingly ineffective. Yet governments continue to pour far more funds into law enforcement than treatment programs, and the government funding that is available goes to existing programs that have proven themselves to be ineffective (5% or less success rate should mean that you go back to the drawing board!). Am I simply a cynic, or is there a very good chance that powerful vested interests are ensuring that 'illegal' drugs remain illegal. Thus huge amounts of money are made out of the illegal drugs AND the useless 'cures'.
