Dear doc,
Amen! to the use of buprenorphine. As a rsident psychiatrist I have seen the effectiveness of this drug in treating opiate addiction and minimizing the uncomfortable withdrawal from opiates. Finally a progressive move made by the FDA. The use of Ecstacy has been muttered about in psychiatry for many years. In the 80's it was for marital and sex therapy and these uses were tremendously successful. Many patients whom I have seen with PTSD have experimented with ecstacy and have benefited from its use and have in no way experienced "brain damage". The governments insistence on keeping ecstacy illegal has stimulated a cottage industry of illegal ecstacy production which exposes "consumers" to improperly produced and even tainted forms of the drug that may have dileterious effects. These are the causes of such brain damage NOT MDMA itself. Additionally the goverment funded ecstacy research allegedly proving MDMA's danger to brain cells has been proven to be flawed and tainted itself by a scientist who made research data agree with what his government funders wanted it to say. My what a sad state of affairs for medicine and patients alike. Many people go without the help they need because of governmental predjudices and fears.
