Your grandchildren are always going to remember that moment. You may not have executed your lesson the way you wanted to but that is okay. Now these children will remember what a great time they had with you. I know you like the word serendipity and how perfect of word it is to describe your grandchildrens experience.
Their discovery is much more powerful than the lesson you had wanted to teach them. Because it was their own. Now they know that life isn't always what you expect and that some times great things happen when you least expect them.
Your grandchildren will cherish this moment. As they grow older they will have a story to tell about their grandpa and how they showed him. Long after you're gone they will recount this story and it will bring laughter and joy to their lives.
So you really didn't fail after all. You have created a memory more powerful than you could have ever imagined.
