Dear Carl Hammerschlag: I've been wanting to tell you how much I look forward to your weekly Schlagbyte. The first time I heard you speak was in Phoenix, probably some ten years ago. As a result of hearing your talk, I purchased a copy of The Dancing Healers which was a great inspiration to me. For some time I had been searching for my own identity and raison d'etre, beginning back in the mid 60's. The author of "I'm O.K., You're O.K", Dr. Thomas Harris provided the kick-off to my awakening awareness that I had some unfinished business to address. From that beginning, I have been influenced by a number of writers. Bernie Siegel, Gerald Jampolsky, Norman Cousins, Elisabeth Kuebler-Ross, to name a few. Incidentally, my favorite of yours is "The Theft of the Spirit." About 10 years ago, a dear young friend of mine here in Prescott, Sara Owens, realized she needed some counseling and asked me for some direction as to whom she should consult. I suggested you and contacted you and brought you two together. As a result--lucky for me!--you were here in Prescott giving a talk at the high school on my 80th birthday and Sara invited me to have dinner with the two of you. A special night for me. I had four children and in the ensuing years have shared your thinking and philosophy with them. My youngest son, Bob Cheesbrough was in New York City sometime this past year and attended a lecture there to hear you and was able to say hello to you following the lecture and identify his connection with you through me. What's the point of telling you all this? Only to say thank you for all your inspiration and let you know that I've discovered that the exciting road of life "ain't over till it's over". Yogi Berra, I think. Since first meeting you, my husband of 63 years died after struggling with Alzheimer's disease for probably 10 years or so. A year and a half after his death, I married a wonderful man whose wife had been in the same care facility and died on the same day as my husband. A little over a year later we married and are continuing our growth together, no longer alone. Maybe fits the description of the title of the last chapter in Victor Frankl's revised edition of "Man's Search For Meaning", "The case for a tragic optimism". He has been another source of great inspiration to me.
Well, enough. I only started out to say "thank you" and obviously got carried away. Keep up the good work! Respectfully, Margaret Cheesbrough Hawley
