The Schlagbyte Landscape with New Eyes really hit home.
My wonderful, tall, handsome, athletic brother suffered
the same fate as the friend in the Schlagbyte.He also
is a physician.Although he had a doctorate in biochemistry and was very successful doing research on brain disorders,he felt he could help people more by becoming a neurologist.So at age 48, he went to medical school and became a dedicated neurologist.He would take a sabbatical leave for 3 months a year and go to a third world country to work with doctors and
treat patients.Upon returning home one year he suffered a seizure and was diagnosed as having a brain
tumor.During surgery,no tumor was found, but a medical
mistake was made, and he suffered a stroke.Now he was
a patient in the very hospital he worked.
Like your friend he lives in an asisted living facility.He has made great progress through therapy,
daily workouts at the gym, and sheer determination.
He spends his days sketching the other residents playing cards,and considers himself as the house doctor. He still thinks of himself as he once was.I
know he is in denial as to his disability. So to quote
one schlagbyte "His ego speaks louder that the truth"
and for that I am grateful.
