The cell phone has become a symbol of what we have done to ourselves by making ourselves constantly available and subject to the whims of another person's inertia rather than a source of help in case of their emergency. It is part of our society's fascination with instant gratification and lack of ability to be still, and alone. If you must carry one - at least turn the blamed thing off and then check it when it is convenient to you - and in privacy - instead of interrupting the peace of anyone and anything within ear's reach.
