My father died of ALS when he was 55 in 1959. My mother made a courageous decision at that time not to engage extraordinary techniques to extend the life of my father an estimated 2-3 months as the proceedures were unpleasant and the likelihood of finding a cure within that time was remote. It has now been 45 years and a cure still eludes us all. I have had concern that ALS might strike me and now so does my son for himself. While achievements by ALS affected persons such as Dr's Lodish and Hawking are inspirational this sadistically abhorent disease still lurks in the shadows (people commonly know Lou Gerhig not ALS) as persistantly as cancer eluding the silver bullit of modern medicine. Let's pray that the next decades's produce more positive results in these an other medically challanging areas.
