Hi Doc- I could really relate to the line, "There may even be something to be learned from the experience of your suffering that will last you in good stead in the future." Two years ago after firekeeping at the sundance, I was gifted pipestone. Something so exciting turned into an emotional roller coaster, and little did I know I was in for the ride of my life! Making my pipe was the hardest thing I've ever done. Even harder than achieving my black belt, and learning how to be a firekeeper! People don't need psychotherapy, all they have to do is make a pipe! Making my pipe has brought up every emotion, i.e. fear, frustration, anger, joy, sadness, self-doubt, loss of faith in myself, etc. It really made me take a look at how sloppy my discipline was, how I wanted to quit so many times. Boy did I suffer! (and here I thought it was because I was Jewish!) But I worked through it,(without pills), and lo and behold I finally finished it, and just ten days ago had it blessed. The sense of joy and accomplishment I feel is overwhelming, and I now look at all the suffering as just something that I went through to make me a stronger person and healer. Thanks for your pearls of wisdom! Mitakuye Oyasin Sharon Sirkis, MD
