9 years old or 90, this says something to me about the potential of hardship to sharpen our focus and change our perspective. It's also a nice reminder to parents that, not only is it not necessary to make life for our children as smooth and rich and pleasant as possible, it is not in their best interest.

Recently, I was part of a team interviewing for a secretary. I asked each candidate to think about her life and share what in their past experience colors their outlook on life and consequently, their work. We offered the job to the one who cried when she answered.

Her parents bacame foster parents during her teen years and have hosted more than 50 children since. This young woman feels enormously blessed by her parents and has learned tremendous lessons from the wide assorment of children with whom she shared her home.

There were sacrifices made by the family to accommodate the foster children and those "hardships" became an important component in her life. And will continue to be important as her "ripples" go out on the pond.
