Lot's daughters - and women's lot

I was informed of your Schlagbytes by my friend and teacher, Gershon Winkler. I came to take a look and found the column regarding Lot's story.

I don't know where to begin - so let's look at the 'salt' story. Why is it so hard to fathom why a woman - who is relationship oriented - would take a last look at her home, her countryside, and her roots? Regardless of the invisible YHVH's intercession, this poor woman is punished for doing something completely natural, completely understandable.

Once again YHVH is portrated as petty. Perhaps she isn't turned to salt, as the story goes, but reduced to a life of despair where the salt pours from her eyes in the form of tears.

Regarding the quote: " Times are changing, daughters have more opportunities to increase their freedom and power." I ask, whose daughters and whose opportunities?

In what country are the women getting freer? Take America, most of the rights that my generation has fought for are now under seige by a fanatic bible belt 'soldiers' and are being eroded daily.

The model of the 'good' family man is now the California Governor who treats women badly on the side, but 'honors' his own wife.

The number of women and girls who are abducted, sold, or conscripted into the sex trade industry - at peril of their lives - increases daily, worldwide. None of the men in the US House or Congress seem to care very much.

Yes, 'older' men rape younger women, but it seems that the culture itself also does as it displays their bodies carelessly, undervalues or doesn't value feminist perspective, and continues to view women's bodies as 'unclean' things.

You want to change the world - cease buying porn, refuse to shop in sex stores, don't have sex with minors, begin to and restore the feminine face of YHVH.

Better yet, listen and do the things that the holy women teachers of the world have been saying and doing for countless generations. Why don't you sit in their circles and revere them?

Until 'older' men join the fight for women's rights, vote for equal protection under the law, and then enforce those same laws upon each other, a woman's lot in life looks a Lot like the story
