We called ours "pinkie" for obvious reason----we couldn't pronounce "Spaldeen".
Also, because so many of the guys were able to hit the "longgg ball" which meant someone had to chase it, we played a variation(invented?,probaly not) where we cut the ball in half and played sidewalk curb to sidewalk curb. It was both tough to throw and to hit--and when you did--it didn't go very far. And yes, it was tough to catch also. We had 3 bases and they were closer than on the street. Also, if you hit the building opposite the batters box, the "outfielder" could catch it off the bounce for an out----otherwise one could run the bases as far and as fast he could(which considering the distances, usually meant only a single). The big problem was not hitting the windows in the building opposite the batters box, to avoid being yelled at or threatened w/"calling the cops". We had one building w/a perfect brick wall w/no windows, but there were usually cars parked at the curb--so we ended up shortening the field. It didn't work very well because the pitcher and outfielder were pretty much standing next to each other.
Ah----the good old days
