right on brother...a single payer system of basic health care benefits for every american makes sense...
the devil, however, is in the details..the insatiable appetite that americans have for everything now regardless of cost will need some means of restraint built in...for non essential services, the pt should bear the cost via co pays that allow individual decision making; those that can afford it would purchase supplemental coverage..and we would likely to evolve to an english type system--with public benefits and out of pocket or
private insurance covering a substantial portion of care for those that can afford it...that type of 2 tier system seems fairer than the current system where many are left out altogether..docs should be free to accept basic reimbursement as payment in full or, if they are in affluent areas with high office overheads, should be free to bill the patient for differences between basic coverage and their fees...pts would be free to sign on with them or not..but that makes it fair to doctors, which the current system is not. Finally, some sort of mechanism to assure patient safety and overhauling the current unfair malpractice system is needed.
