My father went into a coma at age 81. They hooked him up to a ventilator to keep him alive until his kids could get there to say goodbye. We were there the next day. For the next eight days he drifted in and out of the coma and fought the tubes and restraining straps before he died of pneumonia from lying on his back. It was torture for him and a nightmare of frustration for us.
A year after his death I wrote an article titled "A Time to Die". I'll send a copy to Dr. H.
