I am responding from the UK. We have national health paid through taxes and I am ever so grateful for it. I lived in the US for three years and was afraid of health care. I had minor surgery and the paperwork was continual and confusional.

However just as the American private scheme is under pressure so is the British public scheme. It has become too expensive for taxes. When the NHS was established it dealt mainly with infectious diseases, straightforward surgery and childbirth and did really good work with skilled manpower and basic drugs.

Those were easily paid for through taxes. Now the service has to afford technology and management and very very very very very expensive drugs for stress related symptoms and emotional health issues and the costs of very old age.

Because the technology and drugs cost more and more the people are paid less and less and morale sinks lower and lower and waiting lists get longer and longer...
