This story strikes me not because rehabilitation occured, but that it happened through his own intention without "specialists" to guide him through.
That is the miracle of this story. The question of the validity and dependability of Hamm's rehabilitation is an ordinary response from an institutionalized society. Our specialists need to know more than we do, and dismissing or reinterpreting this transformation is an attempt to make intellectual sense out of a mysterious healing capability.
What can't be understood is often feared. In our humanness I believe we do understand the power of hate and it's consequences. Do we trust the power of love and it's consequences? Hamm does.
